Via gothamist, we are informed today of the upcoming “Oscars for food” - the James Beard awards.
Yours truly, would love to go but at $400 per ticket, the cost is a little expensive even for my caviar infused blood.
The category that I’m most closely following is Best New Restaurant. Of the five nominees, three of the restaurants beckon from NYC and I can proudly exclaim “YES, I’VE EATEN AT ALL OF THEM.” Life is tough huh?
The three rests are: Corton, Momofuku Ko and Scarpetta. Just mentioning these names incenses my hunger and juices begin flowing in my mouth. I’ve eaten at Corton once but at Ko and Scarpetta, I’ve eaten twice.
Scarpetta is definitely king of pasta. I have NEVER, EVER had spaghetti as good, as fresh and as al dente as I did both times I ate at Scarpetta. The sweetened tomato and basil sauce was superb as it bonded the tubey strings of pasta. Ko, is, well, I don’t even know where to begin describing it. It’s insane. It’s without equal. It’s tantalizingly, paralyzingly, mischievously, creatively, unmatched in any food i have ever eaten. All i can say is GO!!!!
And corton, where I’ve only eaten once, - I LOVED my meal. I loved the fact that Drew was there at the door greeting his guests. I had a lobster app dish that still teases me in my dreams. I cannot wait to go back.
It goes without saying that the judges of this category DEFINITELY have their work cut out for them but it’s the kind of work that yours truly would not mind doing. As for my real job, blehhhhh…
